One little kiss and Felina goodbye
Wow, a great show. I feel like they play the single tunes until they peak around El Paso, JED --- then they pull out all the stops and jazz fusion jam their butts off. They had to be feeling pretty comfortable taking that much time to explore the Dark Star. Credit to PigPen a force to be reckoned with all night Always dig Truckin towards the end of the show! Smooth bass intro into Uncle John's Love those harmonies.. Sure Donna singing along off Microphone Blazin OMSN. This show is comparable to Jahrhunderthalle

So many super-long shows on E72
One of the 3 E72 long ones - 4 hours w/out breaks. Played in another magnificent Euro concert hall, with a weird, bowed shape. De Doelen [The Goals] has a 2200-seater theater, de Grote Zaal [Grand Hall] , which was then new. They had just played Amsterdam, so they moved just a few dozen miles this night! The 1st Set doesn't have the electricity or punch of most of E72 and it's not the best of E72 for highest highlights - but it's E72, so they still played great. They took just one break this show. First Set. Playing in the Band is tight and Billy is great but there is also Donnaskreech™. Mr. Charlie is excellent but much of the rest is by-the-numbers. Deal is laid into a downtempo shuffle. Chinatown is just average. Jer starts picking it up on Mexicali and Keith starts jazzing, setting up for a stellar China Cat>Rider. Another peak is the Beat it on Down the Line-14. Jack Straw is an intricate but subtle version. Good Lovin' is average Pig though the return@10:00 is eerily psychic. Casey Jones is a perfect version of the mostly rote song. Second Set. Morning Dew ain't bad, it's just out of tune, but Me & My Uncle is all wound up and short with Jer buzzing a burly tone and Keith all tightened. The rest is average to above-average. Jer's tones are the interesting thing here, like on El Paso & Tennessee. Dark Star takes jazzy turns - listen for the hint of Bach's Bourree. At 48min it's a candidate for longest-ever Dark Star - it's 23min before the 1st lyric. I'm partially perplexed: there are a couple good passages buried in there, but shouldn't there be when you have almost an hour to hit on something? Are you really going to wade through this more than once? Must hear it once I suppose. Jer teases Truckin' and even checks his tuning (!) before Bobby finally veers into Sugar Mag. Pig briefly raps Diddley's Who Do You Love? at the end of Caution (they had just played with him). This is the last (full) Caution and is perhaps the best of the 5 of the tour - but these aren't the '68 or '69 Cautions. Note that when Truckin' does launch it's Bobby that plays the riff by himself. Pig stays out on organ. Maybe it's Pigs presence that prevents the '72 Bobby yelps. UJB is prefunctory but One More Saturday Night is a great capper - though (oops!) left off the official release. 1st Set: B- 2nd Set: C+ Overall = 3¼ stars Highlights: Mr. Charlie - excellent China Cat Sunflower - not only one of the tour's best but one of 72's best Beat it on Down the Line - excellent Jer fretwork Jack Straw - intricate but subtle Casey Jones - no surprises but perfect Me & My Uncle - wound up SOURCES: The samaritano.9357 SBD is pitched slightly fast and needs -1%. Otherwise it's the best source. The official release is missing the encore. Chinatown is on So Many Roads.

Favorite of Europe 72
This has always been my favorite of the run. I can give a lengthy detailed review, but in this case words fall short, so I leave it with just a few: Playing opener; EPIC Dark Star; last great Caution. The dead played scores of great shows, but this one stands out among the best of the best.

Another Europe 72 beauty
Each of these Europe 72 performances is perfection. Such a high point for the band. The consistency of performances from night to night was outstanding. The Sugar Mag to Truckin' run was my favourite part of the show. A really gorgeous Black Throated Wind as well.

Longest Dark Star?
The longest, uninterrupted Dark Star is from 12/6/73. This one, if you include the drum solo, is the second longest and 8/28/69(not really the GD but Mickey and the Hartbeats) is the longest if you include the Eleven Jam. 5/11/72 is certainly tops in many lists and rightfully so!

The GRATEFUL DEAD "Live in Concert" May 11, 1972 at the Rotterdam Civic Hall, Rotterdam, Netherlands
` ~^|\_@|@_/|^~ ~<->/<->\<->~ Classic "Europe 72" Soundboard. A nice show to add to your 1972 GRATEFUL DEAD collection, especially for us Pigpen fans. The first few songs work out the audio problems. What else is new with live recordings of the DEAD? I recommend using your EQ during playback of most of the shows on the IA, this one included. Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound. Here's one way to download this show: The IA recommends users of Windows XP view this web-page with RealPlayer. RealPlayer is a free media player you can download at www.realplayer.com. Using RealPlayer to view this webpage, click the VBR M3U link to open the songs in the Playlist. If your Playlist is not open, open it by clicking the Playlist icon at the lower right hand corner of RealPlayer. Once the songs are in the Playlist, double click the song to play it, then click the record button at the lower left hand corner of Realplayer to record it. When the red line reaches the other end click the stop button to download the song. Your song is in the RealPlayer Downloads folder. Repeat these steps for each song. Eat, Drink, Be Merry and Listen to the GRATEFUL DEAD. Thanks for the LOVE from 1972. PS: Get em' while you can, get em' while they're free, get em' now or you'll be sorry...the Man giveth and the Man taketh away...WTTW

Have to agree, love the show, and it is one of the few, if not the only show played on my birthday. I have the entire Euro 72 tour on CDs, many are not the greatest quality, but if you would like a copy of this show send me an email and i can send you the file, or make a copy on CD.

Me Want Download!
How can I get this? I'm been streaming it, but I want it on my IPod. Why can't I download this?
This show has to be in my top 10. I don't think I could live without it and if you don't have it by now...what in the world are you waiting for? The Dark Star>SugarMag>Caution~Who Do You Love is legendary. That, in itself, is worthy of a download but don't stop yourself there. There is nothing to overlook here...it's all good. Whatever you do, DO NOT pass over the Morning Dew. I think it quite possibly could be the greatest Dew ever recorded. Why are there so many five star reviews? Because this show is GREAT! Don't walk away from this one...start downloading! CD Burning Hint: Move UJB and OMSN to disc 2 for a total of three great discs.

for the love of music
This show well deserves its accolades, the free-form dark star in particular. but what sums it all up for me is the tiny intro into uncle johns. jerry and phil's playing is so light, subtle, intricate, soulfull. they were tuned into some higher calling that night in 72.

Dark Star
The single most amazing jam EVER, is in the Dark Star before the drum solo, just pure swing as the band developes slowly the theme, Phil and Jerry leading the way. These moments in Dark Star are little songs themselves (some become songs even), a Great Jam from nothing into nothing, moments you were glad the tape machine was still filled with tape.

Another 5 Star review for this bad mother!
Man, I love the Dead and I'll give a 4 star review to just about anything recorded decent because in the 600+ shows I have there is not a single one that the performance just plain sucks. That said I reserve the 5 star review for only the most euphoria induceing performances. This is one of them. 1972,epic length, great recording quality,40 something min. Dark Star,Jack Straw, tons of cohesive jams, you name it ,it has it. This is my all time favorit show from my favorite year. All performances are top notch especially the longest Dark Star jam of all time.During this part of the show Jerry,Phil, and Bill become one simbiotic unit playing for a common purpose.Pushing and pulling the elastic tempo of the jam with the precision of a pre-scored studio performance. This is one of way too many highlights to mention. Also, unless your only going to listen to this show through your computer speakers, download this version over the other one available. This one has not been man handled as much and will take to high end equipment and eq'ing much better. With a pro mastering job this one would be ready for release. Download and enjoy for life!

Dark Star!!!!
probably the longest '72 version, this one stands alone, standard '72 gig, good sound and setlist, but once you hear Jerry's feeding back his guitar in the middle of the monster Dark Star, you forget about the rest, spacey, misterious, a lot of fine interplay, love it, if you are into Dark Star, this one is a must!!
